Atlantic Supply recently participated in the Annual Cylinder Break Competition held at Preferred Materials concrete plant in Odessa, Florida. This annual event, held by the Florida Suncoast Chapter of the American Concrete Institute (A.C.I.), brings together professionals in the concrete production and testing industries for an afternoon of food and cylinder specimen breaking.
The attendees bring a set of three, 4″ x 8″ concrete cylinders that are compression tested and the winner is determined by the cylinders that break closest to 3,000-PSI while having the least amount of variance between the three cylinders. This is not nearly as easy as it sounds although this competition has seen winners that used a store bought bag of concrete over some that were mixed in a laboratory!
The breaks were done this year on a Test Mark Industries CM-4000-LXI compression testing machine. Atlantic Supply proudly represents Test Mark Industries in Florida and also provides a complete line of concrete testing equipment, consumables, and calibration/repair services.
The competition is always lighthearted and the prizes usually include items such as I-Pads, free concrete testing qualification classes at C.M.E.C., and Visa gift cards. Atlantic Supply has donated Visa gift cards for the top three finishers for the last six years. Many thanks to the staff at Preferred Materials – Odessa Plant for their hospitality and for hosting the event this year.
